Artist's Comments

Black and white sound cartoons are badass, so here's my tribute to most of the ink-blob style characters from that era.

Clockwise from middle left:

Felix the Cat (1919, Otto Messmer.)

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (1927, Walt Disney's character until he lost the rights to Universal, which they only last year got back. This drawing of him is based on the Walter Lantz era Oswald.)

Mickey Mouse (1928, Walt Disney + Ub Iwerks.)

Flip the Frog (1930, Ub Iwerks.)

Bosko the Talk-Ink Kid (1928, Warner Brothers first cartoon character.)

Foxy (1931, Warner Brothers. Almost too Mickey Mouse like in appearance.)

Bimbo (1930, Max Fleischer. Ended up becoming Betty Boop's sidekick.)

Don Dog (1930, Van Beuren. Only in three films before he was transformed into a human character called Jerry.)

Copyrights go to those who own 'em (which in the case of some of these characters is a bit of a muddle).

Excellent, love the idea, love the composition, love the technique, love the quickie lesson on animation history.

Thanks. I might add more info on each character later.

Ah, Felix! Remember that series that was on CITV in the late 1990s with him in?

Looking at this, memories of actually watching some of these cartoons come flooding back. Steamboat Willie is one of those cartoons which will never age with time, something which is so rare nowadays.

Well done Gaga, you've succeeded in reminding me how great the 20's and 30's were for pioneering animation.

Did you hear about how Felix the Cat was created by Otto Mesmer but was owned by Pat Sullivan?

FELIX! I love Felix! Specifically when he imitates Charlie Chaplin... classic.

"Why do you smoke? How can you do that to yourself?"
"I do it because I'm too scared to use a gun."

Felix seems so familiar, as if I know him like the back of my hand, and yet I never watched him that much.

He might've been over-advertised.

With as many channels as there are on TV's now, it's pretty depressing that most of these cartoons can only be found on YouTube.
