Mickey Mouse: Est. 1928 by GagaMan Mickey Mouse: Est. 1928 by GagaMan
A tribrute to my three favorite Mickey Mouse short films. Funny how two of them are the first and last ones.

Plane Crazy (1928): The first Mickey short wasn't Steamboat Willie (that was actually the 3rd), but this one. This was back when he was a lot more violent and vugar than the goody too-shoes we know now. I drew my favorite part, where he scuff's up his hair to look like Charles Lindbergh.

The band Concert (1935): This one has the mlestone of being the first full colour Mickey short, but that's not really why I like this one. I generally think it's one of he most well animated pieces the Disney studio ever did, and one of the funniest too. It was from this short that Donald pretty much started to steal Mickey's flame, and from here Mickey's toon's got rather dull, at least, until...

Runaway Brain (1995):A whole sixty years later, this is my all time favorite Mickey short, even though Disney like to hide it in their closet for some reason. Stunning animation, clever in-jokes and references and Mickey actually being a bad-arse again, something he lost from when they re-designed him in the 40's. And of course there was the brain swapping that lead to the evil Mickey I've drawn in this pic, who rocks.

The band concert was one if my absolute favorites, i has it in VHS and used to watch it all the time... But maybe Steamboat Willie was the first one of him being named Mickey since his name was Mortimer at first

Awesome. If it had Steamboat Willie included, this would have all of my favourite incarnations of Mickey. :)

I'm digging the linework in this, along with the text and accents in red.

I also love your rendition of these Mickeys. The current Mickey is sugary sweet, non-dramatic, preschool teacher. I hope an animator will come out and make another Mickey Mouse movie that will have him at his rascally best. Mickey was like a bad little boy sometimes, but one that you couldn't help but love.

Yeah, the way Disney decided it is that Donald Duck took Mickey's place when it comes to a haracter with well..character, AKA things that humans feel other than happiness.

Yeah, poor Donald...always in a state of hyper-emotionalism, for life...
I hope that Mickey will one day get his "groove" back so we can enjoy him like people did when he first hit the scene.

You've got some good Mickeys here, really well done, specially the one from the Big Band Concert.
I've seen the first two shorts in youtube, and it's true, the first Mickey is better, he's quite vulgar and even mean... in "Plane Crazy" he tries to kiss Minnie even by force. But the last one, I just heard about it but not seen it at all.

Not bad. I thought "Runaway Brain" was interesting, mostly 'cause it portrayed an "evil" Mickey Mouse. (Though if you ask me, I think that technically it wasn't Mickey that was acting all evil, it was someone else in his body.)
Unfortunetly, it was locked up and hid away, probably because parents thought it "scared the kids" or something like that.
Typical how grown-ups can ruin everythign for everybody else.
...Or maybe I'm just being bitter...

Mickey Mouse Rocks! and he is so much deeper than most people think. He's sweet and good natured most of the time but can also be bad*** when need be. That's why I like KH2 so much it strikes a good blance between his two personlaitys

What they dont tell you, it's such a shame. You know I just bought that Mickey mouse in black and white on dvd, and I was so dissapointed that they didnt have "Plane Crazy" on there.
I really like this picture. Those are some of my favorite cartoons too :D

Well, if you have no luck finding he Treasure set, there is also a DVD called "Vintage Mickey", that features the first 9 B&W shorts. It has no extras and is pretty short, but it's a lot cheaper han &W Vol.1 is bound to be, at around $20.

Possibly, but I'm not too sure if it's available everywhere. Maybe in shops with more specialist animation sections like FYE, amongst the retro stuff like Betty Boop.

Evil Mickey rocks!!! I'm constantly doing works that destroy his 50's innocent nature and return him to the manner that he belongs: drinking, vulgar, and violent.

Nice to see someone who also like the old-timey stuff; the band concert is one of my favorites too. Did you know that Ub Iwerks drew plane crazy in two weeks? It's not completely true that he got dull later, but the 'mean parts' are often cut out of the cartoons nowadays. Example from 1942: [link] But well, most people like him because he's so nice.
I'm glad I have all Mickey Mouse color cartoons completely on DVD, including the scenes that are normally deleted.

The BW ones are also released on the Treasures series, but only in the US. (darn it!)
I hate it when Disney hides their stuff... I can imagine why they put Der Fuhrers Face (wrong spelling) in their vault, but they recently said they're not going to release the Song of the South on DVD.
Btw, I remember when Runaway Brain was released it was even featured in the Dutch Donald Duck weekly. I also saw it somewhere, but I was very little back then so I don't remember exactly when and where.

Geez, I haven't seen Runaway Brain in over a decade. In fact, I almost forgot it even existed, since I only saw in once, right before Geroge of the Jungle. But from hwhat I remember, it was pretty creepy. Which was what made it awesome. As for "the Band Concert", was that the one where the band's playing "the Storm", or am I thinking of something completely different?

Yeah, it's the one where they they all get caught up in a tornadeo but continue playing anyway. It had a very early Donald Duck in it too, which brought out Mickey's rarely seen pissed-off moods, back when he couldn't deal with him ;p

I saw Runaway Brain when it premiered in theaters.
Dear God, that was the best Mickey cartoon Disney released in decades.
Tho it is because parents complained that the animation upset their kids, Disney locked it in their "vault" for good.
But, it did make one release onto DVD before that happened.
It got released in Japan on a collection DVD filled with other Mickey shorts.

Yeah, I just realised that after I made my comment.
Plus it was on LaserDisc, not DVD, in Japan.
Tho they probably have it on DVD now, too.
I was just going off information from the last time I talked about Runaway Brain. . . can you tell it's been a while? lol
