Dreamcast Masquerade by GagaMan Dreamcast Masquerade by GagaMan

Give me a choice to only own one console for the rest of my days, and the Dreamcast would be my pick.
Why? Because it's quite honestly the one console I have got the most out of, enjoyed the most games on, and have the best gaming memories from. The Amiga would most likely come in 2nd place, and because I've already done a tribute art for that system, here's a long overdue nod to the Dreamcast.

My first experience of the Dreamcast was when a pod featuring a Sonic Adventure demo popped up in me local cinema, about 3 or 4 months prior to it's launch. Me and one of my school mates were hooked, and went up there every day pumping the guts out of the six levels on the promo disc. One time we had to be kicked out as a queue was building up! Anyway, I finally got my mitts on one about 2 weeks after it's lanuch with, naturally, Sonic Adventure and Virtua Fighter 3. I've since probably owned (and in some cases, sold, then regretted and bought again) almost 75 titles for it. I swear 2000 was just about the best year for gaming I had ever experienced, with about 25 titles in the last six months I wanted bad.

Come 2001, when the console was sadly pulled the plug on by Sega, who decided to move on to multi-format production, I found my self picking up pirate copies of games you can't get over here from Boot sales, including Emulators. As soon as I owned a PC, I looked into how these could be burned fron the 'net (Hey, the system's dead anyway, so what difference does it make now?), and thanks to this I've not only played a whole lot more of the rarer titles, but I've played millions of other console's games on it, too.

What's kind of bizarre is there's still so many games I want to play for it. So many I want to own. I still need the light gun, the fishing rod and Samba De Amigo with it's Maracas. I've found myself wanting to collect DC games, and currently have about 50-odd proper ones. It's mad, for a console that was out for such a short time, there's just so much I like on it.

The Dreamcast was also my first experience of having my own internet connection, and where I first set up the website that'd later become Manga-Gaga, disconnecting on the Angelfire editing page and copying all the html down from notebooks I scribbled, then going onto the ChuChu Rocket Forums and plugging it like a total noob. Ahh, memories~

Anyway, enough rambling about the good ol' days when I actually got excited about game releases, I've been working on this art on and off for just over a week, finally finishing it tonight. I ended up deciding on the orange photoshop background, as it looked a bit more lively than it did in blue (of which is the Dreamcast's British logo colour).

Characters featured from the games:
ChuChu Rocket
Stupid Invaders
Mr. Driller
Rayman 2
Puyo Puyo Series (There's about 3 installments on he DC)
Gunbird 2
Skies of Arcadia
Confidental Mission ('WHO ARE YOU?' 'AGENT GIBSON.';)
Toy Commander
Power Stone
Space Channel 5 (Downloading Music of as I'm typing this)
Cool Cool Toon
Virtua Tennis
Sonic Adventure
House of the Dead 2
Sega Tetris (Best Tetris title in yonks. Why didn't it get released outside Japan?)
Jet Set Radio
Samba De Amigo
Crazy Taxi
Soul Calibur
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

There's probably plenty of other characters from other games I could of squeezed in, but I either forgot them or couldn't draw them (How'd you go about drawing something from Rez, for example?).

Isn't masquerade a cool word?

Another upside to the Dreamcast is that its cheap, or it was when EB sold it for just twenty bucks.

This is a good picture, it pretty much sums up the days of the DC.

I still own a Dreamcast, even though I have not used it for years. As soon as I get the change I'll hunt down for games I did not even had the chance to play.

Dreamcast, always FTW.

The Dreamcast was my first console and I played it to death before I got my Xbox. Unfortunately, I didn't have the money to purchase many games for it *damn, i wanted Rez soooooo freakin' much* but the games i DID have are what I consider to be classics ;D
So, thanks again for this wonderful reminder of the Dreamcast.

The Dreamcast (and quite a few of it's games) go rather cheap now. Luckily it hasn't become a expensive collectors console like the saturn has.

Mmm. I LOVE my Dreamcast. I still play it ALL the time (SA2, baby, HELLZ YEAH)

It's still the console I play most. I've been rather disapointed withthe current generation of games. Maybe picking the Gamecube was a bad choice, as while it has some great games, they're very few and far between. Mind you, I really didn't want to own hebutt-ugly PS2 dispite having quite a few good games, and I wouldn't have room for the X-Box (cause IT HUGE lol.)

Yaaay dreamcast, my fav console too.

Where's fur fighters O_o oh yeah, you didn't like it i remember O_o;
But yay, skies of arcadia. no grandia 2?

Oh yeah confidential mission, i remember those extremely dry voices. They crack jokes the same way my mathsteacher moans trough his lecture.

Still THE (dreamcast) videogame with the worst voice acting goes to house of the dead 2!
My game disc had a scartch cause the damn store clerk slipped the game out of his hands, so the game crasheda t times.
When the villain started his dramatic maniacle laugh, hah.....hah........hah........hah , i tought the game crashed again, but it appeare to be his evil laugh.. ah..

Still, yay for the dreamcast and the old days where i could walk into a store with a 100 euro bill and exit the shop with an entire bag filled with games..
GagaMan Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2006  Professional Filmographer
Haven't played grandia 2 yet, and yeah, I was pretty disapointed with Fur Fighters. The characters were good but the Banjo-Kazooie-esque voices on on my nerves and the gamplay was clumsy and kinda boring. Shame, really.

The dreamcast is, without a doubt, my #1 favorite console. But I think that'll change once the Revolution comes in. That is, as long as they keep that plan to download old nintendo games

Awesome artwork. I instantly recognized a bunch of characters in there =D

I just started playing Space Channel 5 recently. I can't believe I'd previously overlooked this little gem. I totally share your love for the DC, as there is still so much I want to get out of it. I need to try Rez, for instance. Great pic, btw.
